    Attenuation of polarization echoes in NMR: A study of the emergence of dynamical irreversibility in many-body quantum systems

    The reversal of the time evolution of the local polarization in an interacting spin system involves a sign change of the effective dipolar Hamiltonian which refocuses the 'spin diffusion' process generating a polarization echo. Here, the attenuation of these echo amplitudes as a function of evolution time is presented for cymantrene and ferrocene polycrystalline samples, involving one and two five spin rings per molecule respectively. We calculate the fraction of polarization which is not refocused because only the secular part of the dipolar Hamiltonian is inverted. The results indicate that, as long as the spin dynamics is restricted to a single ring, the non-inverted part of the Hamiltonian is notable by itself to explain the whole decay of the polarization echoes. A cross over from exponential (cymantrene) to Gaussian (ferrocene) attenuation is experimentally observed. This is attributed to an increase of the relative importance of the spin dynamics, as compared with irreversible interactions, which favors dynamical irreversibility.Comment: 6 pages in Revtex, 11 Postscript figures.     Fundamental measure theory for lattice fluids with hard core interactions

    We present the extension of Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory to lattice models by constructing a density functional for d-dimensional mixtures of parallel hard hypercubes on a simple hypercubic lattice. The one-dimensional case is exactly solvable and two cases must be distinguished: all the species with the same lebgth parity (additive mixture), and arbitrary length parity (nonadditive mixture). At the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the latter case is considered. Based on the one-dimensional exact functional form, we propose the extension to higher dimensions by generalizing the zero-dimensional cavities method to lattice models. This assures the functional to have correct dimensional crossovers to any lower dimension, including the exact zero-dimensional limit.     Dense packing on uniform lattices

    We study the Hard Core Model on the graphs G{\rm {\bf \scriptstyle G}} obtained from Archimedean tilings i.e. configurations in {0,1}G\scriptstyle \{0,1\}^{{\rm {\bf G}}} with the nearest neighbor 1's forbidden. Our particular aim in choosing these graphs is to obtain insight to the geometry of the densest packings in a uniform discrete set-up. We establish density bounds, optimal configurations reaching them in all cases, and introduce a probabilistic cellular automaton that generates the legal configurations. Its rule involves a parameter which can be naturally characterized as packing pressure. It can have a critical value but from packing point of view just as interesting are the noncritical cases. These phenomena are related to the exponential size of the set of densest packings and more specifically whether these packings are maximally symmetric, simple laminated or essentially random packings.Comment: 18 page

    Equation of State for Macromolecules of Variable Flexibility in Good Solvents: A Comparison of Techniques for Monte Carlo Simulations of Lattice Models

    The osmotic equation of state for the athermal bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice is obtained from extensive Monte Carlo simulations. For short macromolecules (chain length N=20) we study the influence of various choices for the chain stiffness on the equation of state. Three techniques are applied and compared in order to critically assess their efficiency and accuracy: the repulsive wall method, the thermodynamic integration method (which rests on the feasibility of simulations in the grand canonical ensemble), and the recently advocated sedimentation equilibrium method, which records the density profile in an external (e.g. gravitation-like) field and infers, via a local density approximation, the equation of state from the hydrostatic equilibrium condition. We confirm the conclusion that the latter technique is far more efficient than the repulsive wall method, but we find that the thermodynamic integration method is similarly efficient as the sedimentation equilibrium method. For very stiff chains the onset of nematic order enforces the formation of isotropic-nematic interface in the sedimentation equilibrium method leading to strong rounding effects and deviations from the true equation of state in the transition regime.Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.E; one paragraph added to conclusions sectio

    Abstract This paper focuses on the modelling of carrier decisions within an activity-based freight transportation model. To model freight transport, the different actors who are included in the decision making process have to be represented. One of these actors is the carrier. This paper formulates the decisions of the carrier as a selective pickup and delivery problem. To be able to better represent the influence of carrier decisions on the logistic module within an activity based freight transportation model. The objective is to maximize the profit gained, by selecting transport requests. A local search heuristic is presented to solve the problem. Keywords: Logistic decisions, Freight transport modelling, PDSP To represent logistic decisions within an activity based freight transportation model, decisions of a carrier have to be modelled. A carrier faces the daily problem of optimally scheduling his transport orders. Each day a carrier receives transport requests from his clients, which have to be executed within a certain time period. To obtain a maximal profit the carrier has to group certain orders and create an optimal sequence of pickup and delivery tasks. The assumption mostly made is that all requests have to be fulfilled. In reality a carrier can refuse a transport order, when he believes this order is not profitable. In our activity-based freight framework In a PDSP not all transportation requests have to be fulfilled. A carrier receives transportation requests during the entire day. When new requests are received a decision has to be made, whether the carrier will take the responsibility of the transport or not. Unknown requests of the future cannot be taken into account when considering the current request. Hence, the PDSP is modelled as a static planning problem.     Psychomotor therapy targeting anger and aggressive behaviour in individuals with mild or borderline intellectual disabilities:A systematic review

    Background: Poor anger regulation is considered a risk factor of aggression in individuals with mild or borderline intellectual disabilities. Psychomotor therapy (PMT) targets anger regulation through body- and movement-oriented interventions. This study aims to inform practitioners on efficacy and research-base of PMT in this population. Method: This systematic review evaluated nine studies which met inclusion criteria in terms of participants, intervention procedures, outcomes and certainty of evidence. Results: Seven studies revealed a substantial reduction of aggressive behaviour or anger. Certainty of evidence was rated inconclusive in most cases due to absence of experimental control. Conclusions: We can conclude that body-oriented PMT, involving progressive relaxation and meditation procedure "Soles of the Feet", is a promising approach. However, the paucity of studies and methodological limitations preclude classifying it as an evidence-based practice. This suggests stronger methodological research and research aimed at PMT's mechanisms of action (e.g., improved interoceptive awareness) is warranted.</p

    Population inversion of a NAHS mixture adsorbed into a cylindrical pore

    A cylindrical nanopore immersed in a non-additive hard sphere binary fluid is studied by means of integral equation theories and Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that at low and intermediate values of the bulk total number density the more concentrated bulk species is preferentially absorbed by the pore, as expected. However, further increments of the bulk number density lead to an abrupt population inversion in the confined fluid and an entropy driven prewetting transition at the outside wall of the pore. These phenomena are a function of the pore size, the non-additivity parameter, the bulk number density, and particles relative number fraction.     Dynamic splinting for knee flexion contracture following total knee arthroplasty: a case report

    Total Knee Arthroplasty operations are increasing in frequency, and knee flexion contracture is a common pathology, both pre-existing and post-operative. A 61-year-old male presented with knee flexion contracture following a total knee arthroplasty. Physical therapy alone did not fully reduce the contracture and dynamic splinting was then prescribed for daily low-load, prolonged-duration stretch. After 28 physical therapy sessions, the active range of motion improved from -20° to -12° (stiff knee still lacking full extension), and after eight additional weeks with nightly wear of dynamic splint, the patient regained full knee extension, (active extension improved from -12° to 0°)

    Kinematic analisys of the knee when climbing up/down stairs in patellofemoral instability

    OBJECTIVE: To analyze and to identify possible gait adaptations by individuals with objective patellofemoral instability when climbing up/down stairs. METHODS: A control group (group A) composed by nine women with mean age = 25 years (±1.87), height = 1.62 m (±0.05) and weight = 56.20 kg (±7.34), and; nine women with objective patellofemoral instability (group B) with mean age = 24 years (±6.02), height = 1.62 m (±0.06) and weight = 60.33 kg (±10.31) were analyzed. The groups underwent kinematic analysis while climbing up/down stairs, in a previously determined area. Images were obtained by six cameras (Qualysis) and data analysis utilized the Q gait software program. RESULTS: Group B presented, in the support phase, less knee flexion when climbing up (p = 0.0268), and lower speed (p = 0.0076/ p =0.0243) and pace (p = 0.0027/ p = 0.0165) when climbing up and down stairs, respectively. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that group B used functional changes such as reduced knee flexion, speed and pace when climbing up and down stairs.OBJETIVO: Analisar e identificar possĂ­veis adaptaçÔes da marcha em indivĂ­duos com diagnĂłstico de instabilidade patelofemoral objetiva, durante a atividade de subida e descida de escada. MÉTODOS: Foram analisados um grupo controle (grupo A), composto por 9 mulheres com mĂ©dia de idade de 25 anos (±1,87), mĂ©dia de altura de 1,62m (±0,05) e mĂ©dia de peso de 56,20kg (±7,34); e, um grupo de 9 mulheres com instabilidade patelofemoral objetiva (grupo B), mĂ©dia de idade de 24 anos (±6,02), mĂ©dia de altura de 1,62m (±0,06) e mĂ©dia de peso de 60,33kg (±10,31). Os grupos foram submetidos a uma anĂĄlise cinemĂĄtica, onde as voluntĂĄrias subiram e desceram degraus, em uma ĂĄrea previamente selecionada. As imagens foram obtidas por seis cĂąmeras (Qualysis) e a anĂĄlise dos dados foi realizada atravĂ©s do programa Q gait. RESULTADOS: O grupo B apresentou, no perĂ­odo de apoio, menor flexĂŁo do joelho durante a subida (p=0,0268), alĂ©m de menores velocidade (p=0,0076/ p=0,0243) e cadĂȘncia (p=0,0027/ p=0,0165) na subida e na descida, respectivamente.
